budget cuts.
Austin...The park budget for the State of Texas is lower than it was in
1983 leaving state parks unable to afford long overdue safety and sanitary
improvements, according to public records released by Public Employees
for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).
Last week, during a major environmental policy address delivered in Monroe,
Washington, Gov. Bush decried the backlog in needed maintenance within
the National Park System.
In Texas, however, Gov. Bush blocked efforts to increase park revenues,
leaving a staggering backlog of $186 million in unfunded park maintenance
work. Texas ranks near the bottom of states in a ranking by level of park
expenditures.
"Executives who live in glass parks shouldn't throw stones because they
have no money to sweep up the shards," commented PEER Executive Director
Jeff Ruch.
